Africa Week - October 2016
In October we had a great time during our Africa theme week. We learned how to locate the continent of Africa on a world map, and looked at how houses and homes in Africa differ to those in the UK. As part of our work in English that week we enjoyed studying the story We're going on a lion hunt. We acted out the story in the wild area and then produced our own storyboards to retell the story in the correct sequence. We had a great day on our special Lion King day when we all dressed up as African animals and raised lots of money for our link schools at Iharara and Issenye.
Children in Need - November 2016
In November we had great fun when we wore our spots to raise lots for Children in Need. We had a fun filled spotty day, learning all about the work that Children in Need do and the people they help.
Christmas at Ardron - December 2016
As part of our RE work we learned all about the Christmas story. We found out about the importance of gift-giving and the significance of the gifts that the Wise Men gave. We worked very hard learning traditional Christmas carols and performed them as part of our annual Nativity at Christ Church.
We had a great time at our Christmas party, and we got very excited when we had a special visitor in class!
Chinese New Year - January 2017
Happy New Year and welcome to the Year of the Rooster! We had a fantastic day in January celebrating Chinese New Year. We learned about the legend of the Nian, and the significance of the colour red in the celebrations. We enjoyed finding out about the great race and the Chinese Zodiac and we all agreed that the rat was very sneaky when he pushed the cat into the water!
We had lots of fun watching videos of dragon and lion dances and enjoyed making our own miniature dragons to do our own dances with. They look great on our classroom wall! We learned about the tradition of the red envelopes, and enjoyed making our own. Instead of putting money in our envelopes, we all wrote a wish for the New Year. We had a go at using chop sticks (it was very hard) and we even tasted some special foods, including prawn crackers and fortune cookies. To top it all off we all looked amazing in our special clothing and costumes. What a great day we had!
World Book Day - March 2017
On Thursday 2nd March 2017 we joined schools up and down the country in celebrating World Book Day. Throughout the day we enjoyed reading and listening to lots of different stories, some of which we had never heard before. To help us celebrate we all brought in our favourite books from home and we enjoyed sharing these with each other and telling everyone why these books are our favourites. We produced some great writing about our special chosen books, and also made bookmarks to help us find the page we last read up to.
We also had lots of fun when we used lots of different puppets and props to create and tell our very own stories. It was really nice to listen to the stories our friends had made up and some of the stories were very funny. We love reading in Year 1!
