At Linthwaite Ardron we use a range of materials called 'Read Write Inc' (produced by Ruth Miskin) to deliver the National Curriculum for English, throughout the school.
'Read Write Inc.' is a method of learning centred around letter sounds, blending them together to read and write words and using these learnt sounds in their reading and writing.
Using Read Write Inc. materials, the children learn to read effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into comprehending what they read. It also allows them to spell effortlessly so that they can put their energy into composing what they write.
Read Write Inc. Phonics
In Reception and Year 1, children will follow a daily phonics programme to create fluent, enthusiastic readers, confident speakers and willing writers. They will work in mixed-age groups, working with children at similar abilities, to ensure that every child can be challenged and supported at a comfortable and appropriate level and speed.
All of our teachers and teaching assistants are trained in the delivery of Read Write Inc. and will all deliver RWI phonics at some point.
Phonics and literacy lessons take place throughout the school at the same time every day, in every class
- 9.15am - 10.15am.
Read Write Inc. Literacy and Language
From Year 2* through to Year 6, most children will move seamlessly on to the next stage of the RWI programmes, called ‘RWI Literacy and Language’ – also produced by Ruth Miskin.
The children follow a complete daily scheme of lessons, that equips them with the skills to read and understand texts confidently, write fluently, understand grammar and punctuation concepts, think critically and articulate thoughts and ideas clearly.
The Literacy and Language scheme is different to the Phonics programme, as it is always delivered by class teachers, with the support of teaching assistants.
*Some children will remain part of a RWI Phonics group whilst in Year 2 and sometimes throughout Key Stage 2 if needed.
Read Write Inc. Spelling
Spelling is taught completely separately to the literacy lesson. Again, we use the 'Read Write Inc. Spelling' materials in Year 2 to 6.
The spellings sessions are taught daily for 15 minutes and focus on lots of practise of spelling patterns, meeting the National Curriculum requirements.
